Mand Training

Mand training focuses on teaching individuals, especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or communication delays, to effectively express their needs and wants in a socially appropriate way. This skill is not only critical for independence but also plays a major role in reducing frustration and challenging behaviors that often arise when a child cannot communicate effectively.

At Bridging Behavior ABA, one of our primary goals is to help every child communicate their wants, needs, and feelings effectively.
Mand Training is a key part of our ABA programs that teaches children how to make requests — whether for a favorite toy, snack, or simply attention. This skill gives children a voice and helps reduce frustration, tantrums, and other challenging behaviors that can arise when they cannot express themselves.

Purpose of Mand Training

The main goal of mand training is to teach functional communication — communication that serves a direct, meaningful purpose for the individual.
For example:
  • A child might learn to say “juice” when thirsty.
  • A nonverbal child might learn to hand over a picture of a snack or use a speech device to request it.
  • A learner might be taught to sign “help” when struggling with a task.
By empowering individuals to communicate their needs, mand training promotes autonomy, reduces problem behavior, and strengthens the connection between the individual and their environment.

Why Mand Training is Important?

When a child can communicate what they want, life becomes less stressful and more joyful — for both the child and their family.
Mand training helps:
  • Build functional communication skills
  • Reduce problem behaviors caused by frustration
  • Increase independence and self-confidence
  • Create more positive interactions between children and caregivers
At Bridging Behavior, we use mand training early in ABA programs because it builds motivation and teaches children that communication is meaningful and rewarding.
